The Authentic Voter Act
Strengthening Voter ID In Tennessee
What This Bill Does

This legislation strengthens Tennessee’s voter ID and in-person voting procedures to ensure elections are secure, transparent, and easy to verify—for voters and election officials alike.

Voter ID Requirements

Under this proposal, voters must present one physical form of voter identification when voting in person.

Acceptable voter ID must:

-
Be physical (not digital, not on a phone)
-
Include the voter’s name, photograph, and current residential address
-
Show an expiration date
-
Have been issued using documented proof of U.S. citizenship
-
Indicate the voter meets eligibility requirements, including citizenship
-
Provide accommodations for the permanently disabled
-
Not be a student ID issued by a college or university
Digital IDs or digital address verification are not allowed

Address Verification

To confirm a voter’s residence, election officials may use:

-
Tennessee driver license
-
Lease or rental agreement
-
Utility bill
-
Other physical documents showing the voter’s address
Digital documents or digital sources are explicitly prohibited.

At the Polls

-
Voters complete and sign a ballot application with their current address
-
If a voter’s address has changed or registration is inactive, existing legal procedures apply
-
All poll workers and officials receive uniform training statewide
Public Education

The State Coordinator of Elections and Secretary of State must:

-
Provide clear public information on how to obtain voter ID
-
Educate voters on proper ID use at the polls
Why This Matters

-
Ensures only eligible voters vote
-
Prevents confusion caused by digital or unverifiable IDs
-
Strengthens in-person election integrity
-
Makes elections clear, consistent, and auditable
-
Protects voter confidence and public trust
Bottom Line

Voting is a serious civic duty.
This bill ensures every vote is cast in person, with physical ID, verified address, and clear procedures—so Tennessee elections remain secure, fair, and trusted.
